Gladiator 2 - The greatest action scenes ever made, continues (II)

Gladiator an eternal story
In the Gladiator sequel, Ridley Scott created a new central character. This is Lucius, grandson of Marcus Aurelius and heir to the throne.

The story should take place around ten years after the death of Maximus.

Why is Russell Crowe not in Gladiator 2?

Russell Crowe Says He's "Slightly Uncomfortable" He is tired of Gladiator 2 indeed! After having proclaimed his fed up some time ago: “They should pay me, p*****, for the number of questions I get asked about a film I'm not even in” , during a Festival in Karlovy Vary (reported by Variety), Russell Crowe once again made known his lack of interest in this new film.

The actor starred in the 2000 Ridley Scott film but is not part of the Gladiator sequel as his character, the Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, died. Crowe doesn't seem particularly thrilled that the film is getting a sequel 24 years later

Scott specifies that writing the screenplay was not easy.

"There was no script! In fact, we tried four years ago. I had chosen a very good screenwriter, but who couldn't find a good story. He struggled. He was terribly upset at not having been able to keep his commitment. Especially since it's a friend of mine I asked him: Can't you do it? And he simply replied: "no". It fell through."

In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Ridley Scott also clarified the context in which we will find the character of Lucius:

"He's out in the wild, 12 or 15 years later. He no longer has contact with his mother. And Lucilla even thinks he might be dead."

Lucius probably had an argument with his mother, probably due to what happened to Maximus.

Paul Mescal would therefore have been preferred to several very popular actors in Hollywood such as Timothée Chalamet (Dune) or Austin Butler (Elvis). It must be said that the 26-year-old actor stood out last year in the independent film Aftersun. A production that has been awarded several times.

Gladiator, an eternal story at the 5 Oscars

A little reminder for those whose memory is failing: Gladiator tells the story of the Roman general Maximus played by Russell Crowe. He becomes a slave when he is to succeed the emperor Marcus Aurelius.

Returning to Rome after having conquered the hearts of his people, he confronts the son of Marcus Aurelius, Commodus. This one is played by Joachin Phoenix, also brilliant with Machiavellianism in his interpretation of the Joker.

This Gladiator sequel will therefore follow the end of the story of the first film. And we wish him as much success!

Gladiator was indeed nominated 12 times for the Oscars and received no less than 5 statuettes. He also received the Golden Globe for best film music and that shows that Now we are free by Hans Zimmer made us shed liters of tears.
